This is an abrasively real, blistering, account of life on the edge, as two musicians take on the entire world in their struggle to find gigs, survival and fulfillment on the streets of Rome in the early 1990s. A 'trash literati' classic. But who are these two? Rebels. Outsiders. Bohemians and vagabonds. Ultimately heroes who smash into the hypocrisy of modern urban society with no restraint. Behind the facade of tramplike desperation lies the real quest. Jazz has become divine, as the path to rediscover the 'World Family.' Rome glitters and threatens. Magicians, thieves, hustlers and mafia rub shoulders with drunkards, singing policemen and senile pop-stars. Decadence, corruption and sleaze are documented faithfully. And yet poetry and glory resound. Xanadu has clearly lived quite a life, in order to produce this. It resonates with big-time emotional colours. There's hardly a page without someone screaming, weeping or bitching. Often in Italian. A primal tornado, zipped in text. After the raging is done, the answers which emerge are esoteric, swarthed in tarot-lore and mystical. But perhaps we are enriched. Because truth and honesty from the underground subculture must always be listened to. After all, this is probably where our kids will live.
